Web 2.0 @ Libraries Adelaide

This blog has been created to introduce staff at the University of Adelaide Libraries to Web 2.0 technologies. It is hoped that it will encourage staff to experiment and learn about the new and emerging technologies that are reshaping the context of information on the Internet today. The objectives of this program are to:

encourage exploration of Web 2.0 and new technologies by Library staff.

provide staff with new tools (that are freely available on the Internet) to enhance the student experience in using our libraries

Background

23 Things are small exercises that you can do on the Web to explore and expand your knowledge of the Internet and Web 2.0. The original 23 Things was established by Helene Blowers Technology Director at Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County

The idea was loosely based upon Stephen Abram’s article, 43 Things I (or You) might want to do this year (Information Outlook – Feb 2006) and the website 43Things.
In September 2007 Murdoch University launched 23 Things a hands-on, immersive learning programme that provided an opportunity to explore Web 2.0 tools and the impact these tools are having on libraries & library service. Participants were encouraged to use the programme as an opportunity to check out 2.0 technologies and think about ways in which libraries can use these tools to deliver innovative library services. The programme was was adapted by Kathryn Greenhill from the project of the Emerging Technologies Group at McMaster University Library.

The University of Adelaide Library Staff Development Committee is currently exploring the possibility of introducing “23 Things” to Library staff. The year 2008 has been declared the “Year of the Student” with the aim of looking at all aspects of Library interaction with students, and making improvements when and where possible to the quality of our services and the quality of the student experience in using our libraries. One suggestion that has been voiced is “Consider and develop student involvement with the Library 2.0 /Web 2.0 technologies and experiences.” If this suggestion is acted upon it is desirable that Library staff have knowledge and experience of these technologies.

Through these pages Library staff will be encouraged to use the Web to explore and expand their knowledge of the Internet and Web 2.0.

Helene Blowers outlines 7 1/2 habits of successful learners

Habit 1: Begin with the end in mind
Habit 2: Accept responsibility for your own learning
Habit 3: View problems as challenges
Habit 4: Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner
Habit 5: Create your own learning toolbox
Habit 6: Use technology to your advantage
Habit 7: Teach/mentor others
Habit 7 ½: Play
Start with habit 7 1/2 and enjoy the discovery.
